The first thing we do after creating an account is... choosing the gender of your character. This is a cosmetic choice that allows you to better embody yourself in the avatar – it does not affect the character progression mechanics. Of course, this affects the dialogs we read in the game... but more on that below.

After choosing the gender, we watch a cut-scene starring our character, which introduces us to the fabulous yet serious world. The creators of the game focused on the story quests. By progressing through them we learn more and more about the game's world. I don't need to mention that dragons play a major role in the plot.

The game's mechanics are a hybrid of jRPG with a classic turn-based combat system and a dungeon RPG in which we build our team from scratch by making heroes. Our task is mainly to complete the next dungeons inhabited by different monsters, bosses and offered missions. Dungeons are divided into different types. The available types are mission dungeons, heroic, trials, materials, as well as the invasion of the Dragons. The last dungeons are for players with high-level characters and they represent the title's endgame part.

As I said, one of the main mechanics is our team. The game offers dozens of heroes who can join our team. The basic heroes are unlocked as the story missions progress, but they will not be useful in the later stages of the game. We can buy more powerful heroes in an Inn for resources called essence. Therefore, before you buy a hero, think about whether they will fit your team. In more challenging locations, a well-composed team based on the synergy of individual heroes is the key to success.

The development of our heroes is equally important – we can do that in various ways. Getting new experience levels is the first and main way to do that. To increase it, we need special hero scrolls that we can get during missions, by performing daily activities, etc. It is worth remembering, however, that our avatar gets experience on their own, without the use of scrolls, and the level of our heroes can't exceed the level of our character! In addition to experience, we also have access to a number of improvements that increase our team's base stats.

Besides the party, you should also pay attention to the extensive mounts system. The game offers a variety of pets that can serve as our mounts. Their main task is, of course, to help us move faster on the map, but do not be fooled by their absence on the battlefields! They provide us with permanent combat bonuses to stats. Therefore, their development is equally important as the development of our hired heroes.

Dragon Lord, just like other games based on the free-to-play model, also has a store with premium and semi-premium currencies – amber and diamonds. However, the game is not Pay2Win. Items available for premium currency do not affect the balance of the game, but can only make it a little easier. However, the developers have prepared a number of activities that will allow us to get the premium currency for free. Once you get it, think twice before you spend it! The premium store also offers cosmetic items to further personalize our character.
